Why I Paid $1,500 to Rescue Oliver Stone's Domain Name

I make my living as a domain name buyer broker helping entrepreneurs acquire their dream domain names, but in my spare time I like to help people solve their domain name problems, even if they aren't aware of the problem in the first place.

One way I help is by rescuing expired domains from a treacherous fate. For instance, over the last decade I've rescued domain names for artists, musicians, actors and other people and causes I admire, including Freddie Mercury, Phil Collins, and 'Darth Vader'.

Most of my pro bono domain rescue projects I do in a low-key manner and don't discuss publicly. I have decided to share the details of my recent rescue of OliverStone.com, however, because there's a valuable lesson in this about the perils of letting others own your personal domain name.

Oliver Stone's “Natural Born Killers”

 
In January 2012, according to a report in Domain Name Journal, filmmaker Oliver Stone (or someone representing him) purchased OliverStone.com from a domain speculator for $6,000 USD. Later that same year, The Oliver Stone Experience, a Website devoted to the filmmaker's life and work, was launched on the domain.

Mr. Stone's domain name was registered to, and managed (badly, as it turns out) by media conglomerate Universal City Studios. Someone at Universal dropped the ball and let the OliverStone.com domain expire on October 16, 2016. This took Oliver Stone's Website offline for over a month. Had I not intervened, this valuable domain name, and its accompanying Website, could have ended up being lost in cyberspace.

Regardless of whether you’re an Oscar-winning film director or a member of the general public, having your important domain names registered in the name of a third party instead of your name is inherently risky. If that third party fails to renew your domain name, as was the case here, it can be difficult or impossible for you to retrieve the domain name since, legally and technically, you are not the owner and never were.

The expired domain OliverStone.com eventually ended up in auction at a domain marketplace where, thanks to a tip from domain name investor and blogger Elliot Silver, I purchased it for about $1,500 USD on November 24, 2016, which coincidentally happened to be Thanksgiving Day in the United States. A few hours later, the domain was safely in my possession and I reinstated the original domain name servers, thereby bringing Mr. Stone’s Website back online.

I then contacted Oliver Stone directly to make arrangements to transfer ownership of the domain name back to him. The domain is now in Mr. Stone’s possession, and he reimbursed me for my $1,508 hard cost.

By now you may be wondering why I spent $1,500 to buy this domain name and return it to Oliver Stone.

Here’s the thing. I'm a lifelong film fanatic, a former film critic, and I worked as a producer and director in the film industry for many years. I've long admired Oliver Stone's work, especially his fearlessness at tackling controversial subjects. I didn't want this 19 year-old domain to fall into the wrong hands because Universal City Studios had failed to properly safeguard Mr. Stone’s domain. At best, Oliver Stone (or Universal) would have been forced to buy the domain name – yet again – off another domain speculator. At worst, the domain could have been held hostage for years and never returned to its rightful owner.

I also wanted to make sure Oliver Stone's Website was reinstated as quickly as possible so that his bold voice could continue to be heard the world over.

P.S. Some of my favourite Oliver Stone films are Wall Street, Platoon, Natural Born Killers, JFK, and Born on the Fourth of July. His most recent film is Snowden, which I was privileged to see recently here in Canada. Snowden is arguably Stone's most important film because it bravely explores the controversial and timely story of NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. Sadly, this film was not picked up for US distribution by any of the major Hollywood studios, so I encourage you to seek it out. It deserves to reach a wider audience, especially in the United States.

Ten Reasons Why I (and Others) Won’t “Connect” with You on LinkedIn

I am a huge fan and user of LinkedIn. I joined the platform over 10 years ago and I use it every day as a research and communication tool. I also get several invitations a day from people wanting me to add them as one of my connections. Truth be told, I decline most of these invitations for one of several reasons. I used to take the time to message people back and explain why I was declining their invitation to “connect” but this has become too time-consuming so I’ve decided to explain my reasons in this blog post instead.

What follows is going to piss some people off. From my perspective this is about using a business tool in the correct way. LinkedIn is not Facebook, it’s not Twitter, and it’s not email. You are free to develop your own rules for who you accept or reject as connections on LinkedIn. These are mine, love ‘em or hate ‘em.

I do firmly believe that if you avoid making the following LinkedIn “connect” mistakes that the likelihood of other people – not just me – accepting your invitations will dramatically increase. Try it out and let me know what happens.

You are probably also wondering why I seem to be so picky about which LinkedIn invitations I accept. It’s because I believe that if I accept someone as one of my LinkedIn connections it’s an implied endorsement by me of that person. By adding someone to my connections list, I’m essentially saying that I know this person and vouch for the fact they are legitimate and worthy of your attention.

So here we go, my never-before-revealed reasons for not accepting your LinkedIn invite:

1. I don’t recognize your name – I may not have a perfect memory, far from it in fact, but if I don’t recognize your name that’s going to make me immediately less motivated to accept your invitation. If we’ve met before but it’s been a while, you’d be wise to mention that in your invitation message to me. (More on that all-important invitation message in a moment.)
2. We’ve never interacted in the past – This goes hand-in-hand with me not recognizing your name. If I haven’t ever met you before in person, or at least interacted with you in some way, the chances of me adding you as a connection are slim. If we have met before, remind me of when and where.
3. You don’t have a profile photo – This is a deal breaker for me. If you haven’t even bothered to upload a photo to your LinkedIn profile, I’m not going to accept your invite. Would you show up at a business networking event wearing a paper bag over your head? Of course not. So don’t show up on LinkedIn without a profile photo.
4. Your profile picture is not a photo – Sometimes people like to get ‘creative’ and use an illustration or random piece of artwork as their profile photo. This might be appropriate for your avatar on Facebook or some gaming platform, but LinkedIn is a business tool and I’m not going to connect with a cartoon illustration.
5. Your photo is obviously a fake – I can smell a fake LinkedIn profile a mile way, or at least a bogus photo, and there are lots of them out there. The dead giveaway to me is when the photo looks like it was ripped from a stock photo site or a fashion model portfolio site. If your photo is either too generic or too sexy don’t expect me to accept your invite.
6. We don’t share any common connections – I have 500+ LinkedIn connections around the world that I have built up over the last 10 years. If we don’t share a single common connection that’s a potential red flag to me. It doesn’t mean I won’t add you as a connection since I’m not opposed to meeting new people, but I’m going to need to better understand from you why someone with zero current ties to me or anyone else in my professional network is a good candidate as one of my valued LinkedIn connections.
7. Your LinkedIn profile has no details or is vague – Unless I know you really well, I’m going to review your LinkedIn profile to see who it is that’s asking to connect with me. If your profile is light on details and doesn’t tell me what you do for a living and where you work, I’m probably not going to accept your invitation to connect.
8. Your invite message is generic – If we’re not already familiar with one another and you want me to take your connection request seriously, take a minute to customize your LinkedIn invite message. For instance, tell me where we met or how we know each other or why we should know each other. Give me a reason to accept your invite. A monkey can click on a big blue LinkedIn “invite” button. Real people take the time to craft a brief but personal message.
9. Your invite message is a sales pitch of some kind – If your invite message and first contact with me is a sales pitch, not only am I going to ignore your invite but I will also report your message as spam. Behaviour like this is the equivalent of that annoying guy at business events who interrupts your conversation with someone else to thrust his business card into your hand. Take a hike buddy!
10. Your LinkedIn profile is the name of your company and not you – I don’t accept invites from company names or Websites. Why would I? I am only interested in connecting with people.

I realize the above rejection reasons may seem rather harsh, and despite all of the above I do try to give everyone the benefit of a doubt. If anything – and despite appearances to the contrary – I’ve softened my stance over the years. I also respect the fact that your criteria for accepting a LinkedIn connection invite may be looser than mine. I would argue, however, that if you let anyone with a pulse “connect” with you on LinkedIn you are probably missing a critical component of this powerful business tool. What’s the value to you or anyone else if your LinkedIn connections are a bunch of random strangers (some of whom might be bots and not even real people) that you blindly accepted invitations from?

Want to Be a Successful Domain Speculator? Start with these Seven Key Steps.

Almost every day I get approached by would-be domain speculators (a.k.a. domainers) wanting me to sell their domains or give them feedback on their domain portfolios. Sadly, 99% of the domains that come across my desk are mediocre and have zero chance of being re-sold. In fact, most of the domains I get sent shouldn’t have been registered in the first place. Yes, they’re that bad! It pains me to have to tell people that they’ve wasted their valuable time and hard-earned money on buying this crap, but they deserve a reality check.

While there are many people and companies that have made a very good living from the speculative buying and selling of domain names, that doesn’t mean this is an easy field to break into and that hard work isn’t required. Frank Schilling didn’t make his millions by accident or dumb luck; he’s worked seven days a week for two decades to build his successful domain empire. The same can be said for many of his peers.

The common thread I have noticed with the newest generation of people who have been successful in this field, the folks that have emerged in the last five years, is that they didn’t just dive in and register a whack of domain names – anyone with a credit card can do that. These people did their homework first.

Your goal shouldn’t be to amass the largest portfolio of domain names. Your goal should be to really understand what types of domain names can be re-sold for a profit. Then, and only then, should you start building your domain portfolio.

One of the cool things I admire about the domain speculating industry is that a lot of the professionals in this field are willing to share their expertise with newcomers. This means that you can avoid making the same mistakes that they did. There are numerous excellent blogs where professional domain speculators share their wisdom on a daily basis, plus a wealth of other resources and tools to bring a newcomer quickly up to speed.

Because I don’t have the time to individually help every aspiring domain speculator that approaches me, I usually recommend that they take the following essential steps to learn more about what works, and doesn’t work, in this field.

1. Do not register a single domain name for potential re-sale until you have completed the remaining steps. (From what I have seen, this is the hardest step for people to take!)
2. Purchase and read Sean Stafford’s excellent eBook, “Domain Graduate”, which can be obtained at http://www.domaingraduate.com. For the price of registering two domain names, you will learn a ton about what kind of domains to register, what kind of domains to avoid, and where to sell your domains. I insist that everyone who works for me read this eBook because I consider it the definitive guide to this field. Lots of eBooks have been written on this topic, but Sean’s eBook is the best one I have ever read.
3. Purchase and read David Kesmodel's excellent book “The Domain Game” (available at http://thedomaingame.org/), which is an entertaining and informative read about the birth of the domain speculating business. The Domain Game features excellent profiles of some of the pioneers in the space including Scott Day, Garry Chernoff, Frank Schilling, and Mike Mann.
4. Spend at least a week reading current and older posts on as many blogs by professional domainers as you can, starting with DomainInvesting.com (Elliot Silver), The Domains (Michael Berkens), Rick’s Blog (Rich Schwartz), plus check out DomainShane, Domain Name Wire, and the weekly Domain Sherpa Review show on DomainSherpa.com (Michael Cyger). For even more domain speculating blogs, be sure to visit Domaining.com.
5. Join a domain speculator discussion forum such as DNForum or NamePros and read as much as you can. Tip: spend your first week reading and getting to know the lay of the land before you start posting questions.
6. Analyze the weekly domain sales reports published by industry tracker Ron Jackson on DN Journal and for each domain ask yourself, "why did someone buy this domain?"
7. If possible, attend a domain name conference such as NamesCon or TRAFFIC or a local domain investor meetup.

Once you’ve completed the seven steps above, you will be ready to register (or buy or trade) your first domain name for re-sale. Best wishes to you and your domains as you embark on this exciting new venture!

 

To the Top with Bermuda's Smartest Entrepreneur

I love entrepreneurs, and I meet them in the most unlikely places. In this case, on a beach.

Earlier this year my wife and I vacationed in Bermuda. I had not been there since a child, and I was excited to return to the beautiful island and give my wife the grand tour.

I did not realize I would also meet the smartest entrepreneur in Bermuda.

For our day at the beach, I decided to take my wife to Horseshoe Bay, a spectacular public beach area featuring the famous Bermudian pink sand, all sorts of rocky coves, and great snorkeling. The weather that day was perfect for the beach: hot and sunny.

We took the local bus to Horseshoe Bay, and were dropped off at the main entrance, which is at the top of a steep hill that winds its way down for hundreds of yards. As we walked down the hill towards the changing room area, we started to pass people who were leaving the beach and making their way back up the hill on foot. It's a long walk uphill in the heat, and these folks looked pretty bedraggled, with sweat pouring off them. We realized that we'd probably have the same hot and sticky walk back up the hill when it came time for us to leave, and we were not looking forward to that.

But that would not be our fate, thanks to a brilliant entrepreneur named Dean Ming. For the last 11 years, Dean has been the owner and operator of the ultimate niche business, which he calls "To the Top." (Smart name, too.) His business does one thing, and one thing only, and it does it very well: gives tourists a quick ride to the top of the hill in a small passenger van.

Dean realized that after spending a day at the beach, then showering and changing into their street clothes, a lot of tourists didn't want to then spend 15 minutes walking up that long and steep hill in the heat. So for $2, he gives them a ride "To the Top," and during the two-minute drive shares a few tidbits of historical information about Bermuda. I estimate that on a good day Dean is pulling in about $200 an hour operating his service. Not bad for one man and his van.

Dean's sign says it's the best two dollars you will spend that day, and I think most of his customers would agree. This is a great example of an entrepreneur identifying a very specific need and then fulfilling that need. Smart. Simple. Successful. We can all learn from entrepreneurs like Dean.

Discover The Secret World of Domain Names at PodCamp Toronto

I will be attending, and speaking at, PodCamp Toronto next weekend, February 21-22, 2009 in downtown Toronto.

PodCamp Toronto is a free "un-conference" devoted to social media, and despite its name is about way more than just podcasting. I attended PodCamp Toronto two years ago and loved the energy and inclusiveness of the event. I highly recommend it, and you can't beat the price. The Return of Erella.com: A Cautionary Tale

I often write about the importance of managing your domain names and caution people about what could happen should they fail to do so.

I recently witnessed a chilling example of this. Thankfully, this story has a happy ending.

Erella Ganon is a Toronto-based artist whom I have known for over a decade. She also happens to be a friend of my wife. On Friday night, my wife asked me to look into something on behalf of Erella. A few days prior, Erella had lost ownership of her domain name, erella.com, and she was very upset.

Erella had first registered erella.com in October, 2000 with domain registrar GoDaddy, and had been using it since then for her Website and email address. Her Website, located at www.erella.com, is where Erella showcases her work and promotes her services. It is her primary means of generating employment.

An artist and single mother, Erella supports her teenage daughter by doing a number of freelance creative assignments. Sadly, for many years, Erella has also been battling brain tumours. 2008 has been especially difficult for her as she's been in and out of the hospital for seven different surgeries. The good news is that she's on the mend.

During the last few months, in between surgeries and post-operative recovery, Erella was unable to do a lot of her normal day-to-day activities, and due to a misunderstanding, didn't renew her domain name like she normally did. The domain expired, and 26 days later it flowed into GoDaddy's expired domain auction, where it was bid upon and eventually acquired by a domain name speculator based in Hawaii.

Since I work at Tucows, one of the largest domain registrars in the world (and, full disclosure, a competitor of GoDaddy), I am very familiar with the domain name lifecycle and expired domain auctions. I knew that the domain speculator had broken no laws when he acquired the erella.com domain name. It expired. He bid on it. He paid for it. He now owned it.

To him, erella.com was just another domain name he won at auction. He didn't know the story behind how and why the domain expired, nor would anyone expect him to have known that.

At the time I first heard about this, Erella was convinced she'd lost her domain name forever, and was understandably very upset. Email messages to her were bouncing, and adding insult to injury, the domain speculator had added a banner ad for his Hawaiian real estate business to Erella's homepage.

I promised Erella that I would investigate what had happened and see what I could do to help. After researching and identifying the domain speculator, I contacted him via email on Saturday in Honolulu and convinced him to transfer the domain name to Erella.

By Sunday morning, erella.com was back in Erella's hands, and by mid afternoon her email and Website were up and running again.

Needless to say, Erella was ecstatic. I, on the other hand, was pleasantly surprised. This domain speculator responded to my inquiries and could be reasoned with; that is not always the case, and I have the scars to prove it.

The truly frightening thing is that this can happen to anyone who owns a domain name, and most people who find themselves in this difficult position don't know a domain name specialist like me that they can turn to for help.

With that in mind, I'd like to offer five very specific pieces of advice to you on how to avoid ever ending up in a situation like this.

1. Make sure you know exactly when your domain name registration expires. Domains are registered in one-year increments and need to be renewed prior to the end of the previous registration period. Put a reminder in your calendar to contact your domain registrar (domain registration service provider) a few weeks prior to expiry to renew your domain. Then make sure you actually take the five minutes it usually takes to make the renewal, either online via the registrar's Website or by calling them. (Don't know who your registrar is? Do a WHOIS lookup at who.is. Your registrar will be identified as the "Registrar".)
2. Ensure that your domain registrar has your most current and working email address on file. 99% of registrars inform their customers about upcoming domain expiries via email. If the email address they have for you doesn't work any more, you will miss the reminder messages and are at risk of forgetting to renew the domain name. In my professional experience, not having the right email address associated with your domain name is the number one reason people lose their domain names. This is your responsibility, not the registrar.
3. Verify that your domain registrar has up-to-date payment information on file for you. Even if you have set your domain name to auto-renew, that won't do you any good if the credit card the registrar has on file is no longer valid. Make sure your registrar has the correct credit card number and expiry date.
4. Domain name registration is not the same thing as Website hosting or email hosting. Even if you are getting these services from the same company, they are three different services and will all need to be renewed at some point in time. People often confuse Website hosting renewals with domain renewals and mistakenly think they've renewed both when they've actually only renewed one.
5. Finally, if your domain name does expire, act quickly. Contact your domain registrar as soon as possible and ask them what your renewal options are. In most cases, you only have 25-39 days to renew a domain that has expired. After that, it could be gone forever.

Expert Tips on Writing for the Web from Kindha Gorman of MightyThink

My good friend Kindha Gorman officially launches her own Web writing boutique, MightyThink, this week. Since I have always admired her wit and way with words, I thought that interviewing her about her new company and writing for the Web might be both educational and fun.

Q. So I just have to ask you, Kindha, what motivated you to leave the stability of a full-time job to launch your own boutique, MightyThink?

Starting a content development firm like MightyThink has been one of my long-time goals. After spending considerable time learning about the domain name business, I saw an opportunity to contribute.

As the domain industry changes, relevant and quality content is becoming essential for premium domains. Websites have so much more potential when the content is useful, timely, and engaging. That's where MightyThink comes in.

Sure, a cushy full-time job has its perks but writing is my passion. Launching MightyThink is my way of being involved in this exciting domain industry by doing what I, and my team of writers, do best.

Plus, my fourth grade teacher said I had a problem with authority, so I figured I should just become my own boss. It's best for everyone.

Q. What's the most frequent mistake you see people making when it comes to the copy on their Websites?

Sadly, the Web is full of boring, irrelevant, and outdated copy.

Above it all, the most common mistake I have noticed is Websites that don't properly cater to their target audiences. When creating content for your site, think of your readers and the reasons they're likely on your site. Does your site give them all the information they need? Is it clear? Is it engaging? Is it visually friendly? Is it easy to read?

When you have a domain name, or a brand you want to market, you have a great opportunity to captivate your audience and make sure they visit again.

Since we're on the topic, here a few more of my pet peeves:

• Unclear messages;
• Long pages;
• Outdated information;
• Long paragraphs and no white space;
• A lack of keywords to entice the search engine;
• Off-topic and/or boring copy; and
• Spelling and grammar mistakes (A big no-no easily fixed by hiring an editor. The spellcheck function, by the way, is not an editor.).

Q. A lot of companies are interested in launching a blog but struggle with creating the content for it and keeping the blog updated. What advice do you give to clients like this?

A blog is a great tool to ensure there's fresh content on your site. The downside is that you have to invest a certain amount of time and energy to make sure people come back regularly. It sounds easy but there's some planning involved.

If you want to get your blog bookmarked by your target audience (and I imagine you do), the blog needs to be:

• updated daily;
• about relevant and timely topics;
• written in a conversational tone;
• professional looking and sounding; and
• interesting!

This may seem like a daunting task, especially since there are only 24 hours in the day. Many companies hire outside writers, who understand their goals and messages, to act as their voice. This frees up much-needed time, but still maintains a relevant blog.

Q. How important are online press releases?

A keyword-rich and well-optimized press release is quickly becoming an invaluable marketing tool for businesses to generate traffic and drum up clients.

Not only do online press releases tout news about your business quickly and effectively, they also can be easily optimized with keywords to ensure they're indexed by the almighty search engines. By adding some strategic links and relevant keywords, your little press release (and your Website) will attract the eyes of journalists, researchers, RSS feeds, search engines, news subscribers, and most importantly, your target audience.

Here's a tip: If you're writing the news release yourself, keep your press release to one page, two pages if absolutely necessary. If it's any longer than two pages, journalists become grumpy. No one likes a grumpy journalist.

Why I'm Promoting the Social Media Telesummit

As you may have noticed, for the last few weeks I've been actively promoting my friend Leesa Barnes' upcoming Social Media Telesummit, which takes place February 20-29, 2008.

I've also been totally upfront about the fact that I'm one of Leesa's affiliate partners, which means I will receive a portion of the registration fees from referrals I send her way. (For the record, I plan to donate a portion of my cut to charity.)

A number of people have asked me why I am helping spread the word about the Social Media Telesummit, so I figured I'd answer that question on my blog.

First of all, I have tremendous admiration for Leesa Barnes. She's smart, funny, and totally committed to educating and inspiring people to use and benefit from the new media. She's taught me a lot over the last few years, and I've tried to return the favour as often as I can. That's why I signed on.

Second, I'm blown away by the depth and breadth of the speakers Leesa has lined up for the event. Paul Colligan, Sherman Hu, Kate Trgovac, Darren Barefoot, Julie Szabo, Jason Van Orden, Andy Wibbels ... and so many others as well. I'm sorry, but I don't know too many other events that offer a truly international roster of social media and Internet marketing experts like this one.

Third, I love the fact that this is a virtual event that anyone from anywhere can participate in. (Well, if they register for it, that is!) For me, personally, this makes the Social Media Telesummit very convenient as I can learn on my own time, at my own pace, and from the location of my choosing.

Finally, I got the chance to experiment with using social media to promote the event, most notably Facebook. If ever an event called for such an approach, it was this one. That, for me, has been the most rewarding part of this experience to date.

I do hope you register for, and participate in, the Social Media Telesummit. Even if you don't, at least now you know why I've been encouraging you to do so.
